MIRI (Feb 28): The Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak has been ordered to issue traffic offence notices instead of summonses at roadblocks where there is no internet connectivity.

This, according to state Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, came following an issue that went viral on social media recently where a road user was issued a summons for failing to show valid road tax and insurance.

It was learnt that this problem arose due to the poor internet connection at the roadblock scene in the Mukah area.

This matter was resolved with the help of the driver’s wife who could only verify the road tax validity once she reached Bintulu Airport, and for that JPJ Mukah branch had contacted the individual concerned to visit any nearby JPJ office to return the summons.

“The JPJ director has reminded JPJ officers in Mukah to issue a ‘Notis Temu Siasat’ (Notice of Interview) instead of a summons in such situations to prevent similar misunderstandings in future,” said Lee in a statement.

“Save a screenshot of important information from the MyJPJ app in your handphone or keep printed copies of road tax and insurance details as precautionary measures,” he advised.

“By having these screenshots or printed copies in place, this will become handy especially in areas where there is no internet access or when their mobile phones have run out of battery,” he pointed out.

“The Sarawak Transport Ministry remains committed to monitoring enforcement of traffic regulations while addressing challenges faced by road users,” he assured.
