Samsung Explores Self-Healing Foldable Screens as One UI 8 Rollout Hits Pause

by · channelnews

Samsung is making major steps in foldable smartphone technology while simultaneously dealing with software hiccups on its older Galaxy S22 series.

A newly published patent suggests future Samsung foldables could repair themselves.

The company is reportedly developing a “self-healing” display system designed to automatically detect micro-cracks around sensitive areas, including cameras and fingerprint sensors, and reinforce them without user intervention.

According to the patent, microscopic wires embedded around display cutouts form a “sensing loop” that monitors the screen for stress or cracks.

When damage is detected, “dummy metal patterns” activate to strengthen the area, while specialised sealants protect the OLED layers from moisture and oxygen.

The result is foldable screens that could detect scratches, patch themselves and prevent further deterioration.

This technology would address one of foldables’ biggest durability challenges.

Unlike conventional phones, foldable panels flex hundreds of times a day and even tiny cutouts for sensors create weak points prone to cracking.

Samsung has so far relied on side-mounted fingerprint scanners to avoid these issues.

If implemented, the patent could pave the way for in-display sensors on future Galaxy Z Fold and Flip devices, enhancing both security and longevity.

Meanwhile, Samsung has hit pause on the One UI 8 rollout for its Galaxy S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra models (pictured above), which started earlier this month.

Users in regions including Europe and India report the firmware has been temporarily pulled from servers, likely due to stability issues.

Early adopters noted minor battery drain, prompting Samsung to halt the update while a fix is prepared.

One UI 8, based on Android 16, brought a refreshed interface, updated multitasking features and camera improvements.

While the S22 series won’t receive another Android upgrade, Samsung plans to resume the update with a stable build, ensuring users can enjoy smoother performance without risk.
