Microsoft Lets Xbox Controllers Navigate Windows 11 Like a PC
by Joe Gallop · channelnewsMicrosoft is testing a new feature for Xbox controllers on Windows 11 that could change how gamers navigate their PCs.
The update allows users to long-press the Xbox button to access Task View, making it easier to switch between apps and games without touching a keyboard or mouse.
A short press still opens the Game Bar, which provides quick access to widgets, games, and performance information.
The feature is currently available to Windows Insiders on the Dev Channel and is expected to roll out to all Windows 11 users in the coming months.
Microsoft says the change is part of a broader push to improve controller support across PCs, particularly for handheld gaming devices like the upcoming Xbox Ally series from Asus.
The Xbox Ally devices, which run Windows 11, will feature the same long-press functionality with a handheld-optimised task switcher.
While the preview build shows new animations for these handhelds, it’s unclear whether the same visual design will appear on traditional Windows 11 PCs.
This update could be a step toward more controller-friendly Windows experiences.
Reports suggest that future updates might even allow logging into Windows 11 and navigating the operating system entirely with a controller.
The ROG Ally and Ally X handhelds are set to launch on 16 October, offering portable gaming with Windows 11 integration. The base model is expected to feature a 720p display starting around US$550 (A$850), while the premium Ally X will include a 1080p screen and retail near US$900 (A$1,400).
With Microsoft bridging the gap between PC and console-style controls, these changes hint at a future where gaming PCs are as easy to navigate with a controller as an Xbox console.
