Google Maps Will Soon Show You The Correct Lane Using AI
by Joe Gallop · channelnewsGoogle Maps is taking navigation a step further with the launch of AI-powered live lane guidance, designed for cars with Google built-in.
The feature is supposed to make highway driving and complex junctions safer and less stressful by “seeing” the road much like a human driver.
Using the car’s front-facing camera, Google Maps now analyses lane markings, directional arrows and road signs in real time.
The AI then integrates this data with Maps’ navigation system to provide visual and audio cues, alerting drivers if they need to change lanes to avoid missing an exit.
For example, if you’re in the far-left lane but your exit is on the right, Maps will notify you early and guide you safely across lanes.
The first vehicle to feature live lane guidance is the Polestar 4, with rollout planned in the US and Sweden in the coming months.
Google says the system will expand to additional cars and road types through partnerships with key automakers, including Volvo, Hyundai and MG Motors.
Unlike phone-based projection systems like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, live lane guidance relies on the car’s built-in hardware, meaning only vehicles with Google built-in can access it.
The feature highlights the lanes directly on the dashboard display and provides clear instructions for lane changes, reducing last-minute manoeuvres and the risk of accidents.
As more vehicles adopt AI-powered navigation, drivers in Australia could soon see safer journeys, especially on multilane highways and tricky intersections.
