Google Brings Gemini AI to Chrome

Google is rolling out major AI upgrades to its Chrome browser, integrating its Gemini AI assistant to help users do more than just search the web.

The update, currently only available for Mac and Windows users in the US, also paves the way for “agentic” features that can handle tasks on your behalf. These are set to launch in the coming months.

Gemini in Chrome can now read open tabs, access browsing history and integrate with Google services such as Calendar, YouTube, Maps and Workspace.

Users will be able to compare products across multiple tabs, summarise information, and even recall previously visited websites.

For instance, if you closed tabs while researching team-building activities, Gemini can reopen and summarise them the next day.

Mobile users on Android already have Gemini, with iOS support coming soon. On mobile, Gemini can now consider the full context of a page, enabling “deeper questions” and richer AI assistance.

Google says it will introduce agentic capabilities in the next few months.

These will allow Gemini to perform repetitive or “tedious” tasks, such as rescheduling deliveries, or ordering groceries. Google says safeguards will prevent high-risk actions without user confirmation.

Chrome’s AI updates also include the launch of AI Mode in the address bar, which supports long and complex queries.

Users can ask questions directly about the page they’re on or across multiple websites and receive AI-generated summaries.

Enhanced Safe Browsing uses Google’s Gemini Nano model to detect phishing scams, fake virus alerts, and other malicious content. Chrome will also soon offer one-click password resets on supported sites for exposed accounts.

The move comes as AI-powered browsers become a battleground for tech giants. OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity are all rolling out their own AI agents and browser tools.

“Today represents the biggest upgrade to Chrome in its history,” said Google VP Mike Torres. “We’re using AI to help users get more from the web, while keeping browsing fast, simple and safe.”
