PlayStation 6 and Xbox ‘Magnus’ Tipped for 2027 Launch
by Joe Gallop · channelnewsRumours are heating up about the next generation of gaming consoles, with multiple leaks pointing to 2027 as the launch window for Sony’s PlayStation 6 and Microsoft’s new Xbox, codenamed Magnus.
Sony has already confirmed the PS6 will use AMD chips, continuing the x86 CPU architecture, ensuring backward compatibility with PS4 and PS5 titles.
Mark Cerny, PlayStation’s lead system architect, recently teased a “future console in a few years’ time,” highlighting three new graphics technologies from Project Amethyst: Neural Arrays for AI-driven graphics, Radiance Cores for advanced lighting effects, and Universal Compression to improve performance and reduce power use.
The PS6 may still include an optional disc drive and Sony is reportedly also developing a handheld version under the codename Canis.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has dismissed speculation that it is moving entirely to cloud gaming.
Insider leaks suggest the Xbox Magnus will feature an AMD Magnus APU, combining CPU and GPU in a single processor.
The console is rumoured to have Zen 6 CPU cores, RDNA 5 graphics, up to 48 GB of GDDR7 RAM, and AI capabilities of 110 TOPS.
Reports indicate Magnus could outperform the PS6 in raw power, potentially running games at 4K 144FPS on monitors, though differences may be less noticeable on TVs.
Industry insiders expect Magnus to be more expensive than the PS6, with early estimates suggesting a price range of A$800–$1,200, reflecting its PC-like versatility and high-end components.
Microsoft may even offer multiple SKUs to cater to different audiences, from casual console gamers to PC-focused players.
Both consoles are expected to follow a seven-year console cycle, with the Xbox possibly arriving earlier in 2027, and the PS6 later in the year.
If the leaks prove accurate, 2027 could mark a major milestone in the console wars.
