Met Office issues nine-hour weather warning for snow in Wales
by Branwen Jones · Wales OnlineThe Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice in some parts of Wales. The forecast agency has warned that snow and icy patches could lead to some travel disruption.
The weather warning will come into force at 3am until 12pm on Thursday, January 9. The Met Office has warned that a few centimetres of snow could affect some areas. The warning reads: "Showers, mostly of rain and sleet at low levels and near coasts, but of snow inland and over higher ground, are expected to affect the area later Wednesday night and on Thursday morning.
"With many surfaces below freezing, this will lead to some icy stretches on untreated surfaces, while a few cm of fresh snow could affect some areas, mainly places above about 100 metres." For the latest Welsh news delivered to your inbox sign up to our newsletter.
The affected areas include parts of north-west England, south-west England and various counties in Wales, mainly in the north and west of the country. They are:
- Carmarthenshire
- Ceredigion
- Conwy
- Denbighshire
- Flintshire
- Gwynedd
- Isle of Anglesey
- Pembrokeshire
- Powys
- Swansea
- Wrexham
People who live or travel to these affected areas have been warned that snowy, wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous. According to the Met Office, people should keep themselves and others safe by planning your route, giving yourself extra time for your journey.
"Check for road closures or delays to public transport and amend plans if necessary," it adds. The forecast agency also warns about driving. It says: "If driving, make sure you have some essentials in your car in the event of any delays (e.g., warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, ice scraper/de-icer, a warning triangle, high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger)."
It also adds: "Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area."
