Tesco and Sainsbury's shopper saves £2,500 with 'free money' app

Supermarket shoppers could pocket thousands of pounds in savings by using a app that works with big-name stores like Tesco, Sainsbury's, and Asda. The Sprive app lets customers get cashback and other deals such as discounted vouchers on their spending, to help towards mortgage payments.

One satisfied customer reported that he's on track to slash £2,500 off his interest and shorten his mortgage duration substantially thanks to the app. Christopher Gilbert, 40, from Surrey Hills, said: "Shop with Sprive is literally free money – you are doing the shopping anyway, and it doesn’t cost you any more to use the app, but it does earn you money to overpay."

Mr Gilbert frequently uses Sprive when buying his weekly groceries at Tesco and Sainsbury's and claims cashback from Waitrose, M&S, and John Lewis. Not limited to supermarkets, Sprive can also be used at Morrisons and Asda, plus popular eateries such as Costa Coffee, Greggs, and Pizza Express.

Gilbert shared his excitement over the financial perks of using the app: "We have only been using the app for a few months, and already we are on track to save almost £2,500 in interest and shave 3 years off the mortgage term, and the best thing of all is it actually hasn’t cost me anything to do. My only regret is that I didn’t know about it sooner."

Working as a senior sales consultant, Mr Gilbert holds a £400,000 mortgage and has owned his home since 2009. He has a 1.79 percent five-year fixed deal and got on board with Sprive in August 2024. He explained: "Sprive offers another way of overpaying my mortgage with zero hassle. On a normal month, I would pay around £125 in overpayments but on a good month, more than £400."

Further explaining the benefits, he shared: "With the Shop with Sprive feature - which is so easy to use - I’m averaging about £65 per month in overpayments just from cashback." He also got some cashback from a recent trip to B&Q when he spent £400 on some items for his home. The Sprive app also offers a feature that enables users to contribute additional monthly payments directly from their connected bank account towards their mortgage.
