Asda driver says 'God made me go back' after saving woman's life
by Neil Shaw · Wales OnlineA hero Asda driver saved a woman's life while making a delivery to her home. Leandro Pinto Dantas took action after he didn't get an answer at the customer's house and sensed "something was wrong".
He decided to go back for another look and after pushing some branches away he spotted her lying unconscious on the floor. Asda Poole in Dorset worker Leandro quickly phoned 999 and got a neighbour to help him. Paramedics were soon on the scene and treated the lady, who's diabetic, with glucose to raise her low blood sugars.
Leandro, 36, said: "It was around 9pm when I went to the house. Everything seemed normal. 'The light was on and the TV was on. I knocked on the door but didn't get an answer, so I called the contact phone number we had for the delivery but got no reply. 'Something didn't feel right so I looked in the window, but no one was coming.
"I thought at first they must have gone out but I believe God made me go back to the window and I pushed some branches away so I could get a better look and that's when I saw the lady face down on the floor so I called for an ambulance. I think it was fate that I called there that day. I wasn't down to work, but I swapped shifts. I'm just happy that I was there and saved her."
While she was being looked after, Leandro put the lady's shopping away, only leaving to carry on with his deliveries when she was about to be taken to hospital. A few days later he called to see her at home to see how she was getting on and to bring her some flowers.
The lady, who is in her 60s, was extremely grateful and even wrote to thank Leandro - calling him a "wonderful chap". She said: "Leandro is such a wonderful chap, I can't thank him enough for what he did. He did a marvellous job - he even came round later with flowers for me.
''What he did was certainly going above and beyond what I would expect supermarket delivery drivers to do. I don't remember much of what happened, only that I had a hypo and I came round with a paramedic giving me glucose to get my blood sugars up.
''My blood pressure wasn't quite right either so I was taken to hospital to be checked over and was allowed home the next day."
Leandro has now been nominated for an Asda service superstar award. Heidi Mallinson, the store's online trading manager, said: "Leandro is so kind and thoughtful, always willing to help whenever he can. He's just an all-round nice guy.
"We are so very proud of the way he handled the delivery and he's instincts that something was amiss with his customer. He truly is a hero and went totally above and beyond which in turn probably saved the customer's life."
