Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 could get ahead of the foldable pack with this feature
Galaxy S25 Ultra-level camera upgrade
by Jon Mundy · Tech AdvisorThe Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 could finally steal a march on the foldable smartphone competition with a major camera upgrade.
According to a recent report by Dutch website GalaxyClub, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 will ditch the 50MP main camera of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 in favour of a 200MP main sensor.
This would appear to bring it in line with the range-topping (and decidedly non-foldable) Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, potentially removing one more reason to stick with a classic form factor.
Other Galaxy Z Fold 7 camera upgrades
That’s not the only camera that’s set to be improved on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. While the 12MP ultra-wide and 10MP telephoto will return, there could be a new component on the internal surface.
The report continues that the somewhat maligned, often ignored under-display selfie camera on the inside of the device will be receiving a superior sensor.
We’re not sure if this will mean an increase to the megapixel count, but anything to scoop more light in and lessen those super-soft selfies is fine by us.
The front camera on the outside of the device will be the same 10MP affair.
Why is this big news for Samsung?
Samsung was a foldable phone pioneer, adopting bendy phones as a viable mainstream option years before any of its competitors. The first Galaxy Fold (as it was originally known) launched way back in 2019.
However, the early foldable lead that Samsung established didn’t last. While its current flagship foldable, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, remains a more-than-solid offering, it has clearly fallen behind its rivals in a number of key areas.
It’s quite a bit thicker than the Oppo Find N5 and the Honor Magic V3, for one thing, while its camera system simply doesn’t stack up to that of the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Most of the competition has larger batteries and faster charging.
News that Samsung might be getting back in the foldable game, as it were, is most welcome. There’s still a lot of work needed to get the foldable form factor to where it needs to be. Proper dust resistance, stronger app compatibility, and a more robust internal screen are all matters that need to be addressed.
Having the original foldable king around and in fighting form will be hugely helpful to achieving some (hopefully all) of those goals.
