Xiaomi’s Mix Flip 2 shows Samsung just how good a flip phone can be
Compact foldable packs all the specs
by Jon Mundy · Tech AdvisorXiaomi has finally announced the Mix Flip 2, a formidable-looking new flip phone.
Driven by a Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and with a huge 5,165mAh battery, it’s looking to outgun the Galaxy Z Flip 7, which launches on 9 July. However, unlike Samsung’s device, the Mix Flip 2 will initially be limited to China, with no word on a potential global launch.
That battery capacity is a standout spec here, as it’s quite a bit larger than any of its rivals. The Motorola Razr 60 Ultra, for example, has a 4,700mAh battery, while the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 has been spotted in certification with a 4,300mAh cell.
This is backed by impressive-sounding 67W wired and 50W wireless charging.
The phone was announced alongside a wave of other new devices, including the Smart Band 10, Pad 7S Pro, AI Glasses, a smaller 41mm model of the Watch S4 and YU7 electric vehicle.
Xiaomi Mix Flip 2 specs
As for that Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, it’s backed by a meaty new dual VC 3D cooling system and either 12- or 16GB of RAM. There’s a choice of 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of storage.
There are two displays, as we’ve come to expect by now. The inner screen is a 6.86-inch 120Hz AMOLED with a 3,200 nits peak brightness. The outer screen is a 3.5-inch 120Hz AMOLED.
In design terms, the Xiaomi MIX Flip 2 is 7.57mm slim and weighs 199g. It comes in four colours: ‘White’, ‘Purple’, ‘Green’, and ‘Checkered Gold’.
Xiaomi Mix Flip 2 camera and availability
On the camera front, Xiaomi has included a main camera with a 50Mp Light Fusion 800 image sensor and a Leica Summilux optical lens. This is backed by a 50Mp ultra-wide, which is a major change from the telephoto secondary of the original Xiaomi Mix Flip. There’s a 32Mp selfie camera around the front.
The key qualifier for all of this is that the Xiaomi Mix Flip 2 has only been announced for the Chinese market at present. When Tech Advisor asked about wider availability, the company said, “We don’t have any updates yet for the international markets regarding today’s announcements”.
Pricing starts from 5,999 RMB (about £608), but of course, that’s unlikely to result in an exact translation when (and indeed if) the Mix Flip 2 finally makes its way West.
