Galaxy Z Fold 7 Ditched the Pen — But Samsung's Not Done With It Yet
by Kristijan Lucic · Android HeadlinesThe Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 has ditched the S Pen. That’s not exactly a secret at this point. Some people were left disappointed by that, but the S Pen could return to Samsung’s foldables in the future.
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 did ditch the S Pen, but Samsung’s not done with it just yet
That’s not something we expected to talk about so soon after the Galaxy Z Fold 7 launch, but there you have it. Samsung has confirmed that it’s developing “thinner and innovative” S Pen technologies.
That information comes from the Executive Director of Samsung’s Mobile division, Kang Min-seok. He shared that comment with ETNews, a Korean publication. If Samsung ends up getting the tech it needs, it could return the S Pen to its book-style foldables.
“The Fold 7 emphasized that consumers want a thin and light product. Please think of it (S Pen removal) as a trade-off where you lose one if you choose one. We are also researching and developing thinner and innovative technologies for the S Pen, so we will reconsider it when the level of perfection increases and there is consumer demand,” Kang said.
From his statement, you can clearly see that Samsung is trying to develop an S Pen that would not sacrifice the thinness or lightness of foldable phones. As expected, removing the S Pen support was a tradeoff on Samsung’s part.
Many people would support Samsung’s decision, but they’d probably prefer to have the best of both worlds
In all honesty, the vast majority of people would probably take thinness and lightness the Galaxy Z Fold 7 delivers over the S Pen support. As a reminder, Samsung’s foldables never had a silo for the S Pen, they simply supported it.
It remains to be seen what will happen with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 next year. Samsung could end up returning S Pen support, anything is possible. We’ll have to keep a close eye on the developments over the next year or so.
Speaking of the S Pen, one specific rumor also claims that Samsung will remove it from the Galaxy S Ultra series after the Galaxy S26 Ultra. We’re not sure if that’s true, however.
