Gemini Dethrones ChatGPT as the Top Free iPhone App

by · Android Headlines

Google’s Gemini is now the top free iPhone app, dethroning OpenAI’s ChatGPT artificial intelligence assistant from the top spot. With the App Store’s latest stats, Gemini has shifted ChatGPT to second place. Notably, Gemini is also the top free iPad app in the US. It looks like the recently launched “Nano Banana” image editor has helped Gemini to claim the top free iPhone app spot in the region.

Gemini climbs to the top free iPhone app spot in the US

Logan Kilpatrick, the product lead for Google AI Studio and Gemini API, was the first to find that Gemini became the top free iPhone app on the App Store. He posted a screenshot on X/Twitter of the new top rankings on the iOS application store. We’ve also independently verified that on Monday at noon, Gemini continued to remain at the top of the Top Free Apps chart for iPhones in the US.

Additionally, Google’s AI chatbot also claimed the second position in the same rankings in Canada and the UK. It’s worth adding that this is the first time Gemini has achieved this milestone. OpenAI’s ChatGPT and China’s DeepSeek both reached the top of the App Store earlier this year. Meta’s Threads is now the third most-downloaded app on the App Store, followed by Elon Musk’s X and Google Search in the fourth and fifth places, respectively.

The “Nano Banana” update seems to be the main reason behind the popularity

Google recently launched the “Nano Banana” update for the Gemini AI chatbot, which may be the main reason behind its new popularity on the App Store. The new powerful image editing tool allows people to upload a photo and make inline edits while keeping the subjects consistent. Thanks to the update, you can now change costumes or locations in your photos, seamlessly blend two images, and apply a series of incremental edits.

Google is offering the Nano Banana editing tool to all Gemini users for free. However, paid users get access to the same with higher rate limits. That said, Google is continuing to add more and more features to the Gemini app this year to make it more popular among users across platforms.
