Google Translate on Android Gets New Home Screen Widgets
by Akshay Kumar · Android HeadlinesJust a couple of weeks ago, the Google Translate app for Android and iOS devices received a major Gemini update, which improved its understanding of context, idioms, and tone. The search titan is now rolling out an update to the Google Translate app for Android, which brings a handful of new home screen widgets.
The latest update focuses on reducing the steps required to start a translation for tools like voice input, camera translation, and conversation mode.
Google Translate’s latest update brings a new text translation widget
The latest Google Translate update comes with a new text translation widget. It works exactly like the top half of the older Quick Actions widget. Once you tap it, the application opens immediately with the keyboard ready for any text entry. You can resize the widget from 3×1 to 5×1 on your phone’s display.
It can now clearly display your current language pairing. The company has left the Saved Translation widget unchanged, which continues to offer its familiar Material You Design.
The update also brings five new shortcut tiles
Besides the main text widget, Google Translate has added five specific shortcut tiles. These rounded 2×1 squares feature the Translate logo in the corner. Each of these tiles triggers a different function. First is a camera shortcut, which can translate text using your smartphone’s lens. There’s a voice option that listens and translates spoken words in real time.
Moving to other tiles, the app now offers a live translation tile for audio. There’s also a clipboard shortcut, which can instantly translate copied text. Furthermore, there’s now a practice button that opens a custom language learning session.
Google Translate was already offering features like the camera, live translation, and practice tools, which were accessible if you long-pressed the app icon. Google has now made them available as standalone times, making it easier to reach them. Notably, the clipboard option comes in handy if you find yourself constantly copying text from messages or websites.
The new widgets are rolling out with version 10.8 of the Google Translate app for Android devices. Once you get the update, you will have a total of eight different home screen items to choose from.
