AirPods Max 2 Are Here with Lossless Audio Support, Live Translation & 1.5x Better ANC

It has been a long road for fans of Apple’s premium over-ear headphones. While the company’s smaller earbuds received frequent updates, the original AirPods Max seemed frozen in time for years. That changed today with the official launch of Apple’s AirPods Max 2. While the iconic silhouette remains familiar, the technology inside has undergone a significant overhaul.

The H2 chip upgrade: Why the AirPods Max 2 sound better than ever

The most important change is the move to the H2 chip. This processor has been the “secret sauce” inside the AirPods Pro for some time. Now, its arrival in the Max line enables several features that were previously impossible. According to Eric Treski, Apple’s director of Audio Product Marketing, this new hardware allows the noise cancellation to be up to 1.5x more effective than the first generation.

Beyond just silencing the world around you, the H2 chip introduces a suite of “intelligent” features. For the first time, Max users can access Adaptive Audio, which automatically blends transparency and noise cancellation based on your surroundings. Another addition is Conversation Awareness—a feature that lowers your music and isolates voices the moment you start speaking.

A new tool for creators

Apple appears to be leaning heavily into the professional market with this release. One of the standout announcements is the improved wired experience. The AirPods Max 2 now support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio via the included USB-C cable. This technical boost makes them a more viable tool for musicians and podcasters.

Apple’s blog claims that these are currently the only headphones that allow creators to mix in Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking. To further sweeten the deal for content creators, the new model includes studio-quality audio recording and a “camera remote” function. This lets you trigger your iPhone’s shutter or start a video recording using the Digital Crown.

Head gestures for Siri, Live Translation

The updates also focus on making the headphones more intuitive for daily use. Users can now interact with Siri through simple head gestures—nodding “yes” or shaking their head “no” to respond to announcements. There is also a new Live Translation feature, powered by Apple Intelligence, aimed at helping people communicate across different languages in real time.

For those who use their headphones for calls, “Voice Isolation” now works to prioritize your speech while blocking out wind or background chatter. Even the transparency mode has been tweaked with a new signal processing algorithm to make the outside world sound more natural and less “processed.”

AirPods Max 2: Price, colors and availability

Despite the internal upgrades, Apple has kept the same $549 price tag as the original model. You can buy it in colors like midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue.

If you have been holding out for a pair, you won’t have to wait much longer. Orders for the AirPods Max 2 open on Wednesday, March 25, with units expected to start shipping and appearing in Apple Store locations in early April.
