Foldable iPhone Could Feature Under-Display Camera but Ditch Face ID
by Tyler Lee · Android HeadlinesIt is widely believed that Apple is developing its own foldable iPhone. However, it seems that despite it potentially being a rather premium device, Apple might not include certain features you would find in other high-end iPhones. According to the latest reports, the foldable iPhone could feature an under-display camera, but it might ditch Face ID in the process.
Foldable iPhone to feature under-display camera
This information comes courtesy of Max Weinbach on X, who shared data from JP Morgan analysts on what kind of specs Apple’s upcoming iPhones could pack. According to the data, the analysts believe that Apple will go with a 24MP under-display selfie cam for the foldable iPhone. But in the process, it will not come with Face ID.
This means that the only biometric security Apple will give foldable iPhone users is Touch ID. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Touch ID pretty much works flawlessly and has for years. However, Face ID is arguably more secure, but we suppose for a first-gen device we shouldn’t expect too much.
The report also features that the phone will sport a dual camera setup. This includes a 48MP wide-angle camera and a 48MP ultra-wide angle camera. Once again, this is one less camera compared to Apple’s regular flagship iPhones. But then again, we suppose the selling point of the foldable iPhone is the foldable form factor.
We’ve also seen other Android foldable makers sacrifice camera quality to achieve an ultra-slim design, so why not Apple too, right?
iPhone Air 2 not cancelled?
Surprisingly, the analysts at JP Morgan believe that Apple will launch an iPhone Air 2. This is interesting because according to earlier reports, Apple has apparently cancelled the iPhone Air. This is because of poor sales, which isn’t surprising because to achieve the ultra-thin form factor, Apple had to sacrifice on battery life. Plus the use of a single camera in a phone priced that high makes it hard to recommend.
However, Weinbach seems to be pretty confident in these reports. According to his post, “JP Morgan and most bank analysts are VERY good at getting information like this from supply chain.” It will be interesting to see if Apple will indeed launch the iPhone Air 2. Hopefully, Apple will have learned from its mistakes and give users a phone that can at least last an entire day.
