Pixel 6a Battery Fix Is Coming Next Week… and It’s Gonna Hurt
by Kristijan Lucic · Android HeadlinesGoogle has confirmed that a fix for the Pixel 6a’s battery overheating issues is coming next week. To be more accurate, Google will start rolling out the fix on July 8 to all Pixel 6a devices. Google did say that only users with “impacted devices” will see any effect on their battery.
Google will start rolling out a battery fix to “impacted” Pixel 6a devices next week
What’s this all about? Well, this move was prompted by two Pixel 6a catching fire, actually. Google had to reach. Google’s Alex Moriconi said to The Verge, that the update will reduce the battery capacity on affected phones after they reach 400 charging cycles.
He also added that affected users will get a notification when their phone has completed 375 charging cycles. That will give them a heads-up that the battery capacity will get lowered soon. Needless to say, this update will lower battery life even further, and it wasn’t good to begin with.
Google also said that users could see other changes, “like reduced charging performance or short-term changes to how the battery-level indicator on your phone shows your battery capacity as your phone learns its revised battery capacity.”
It’s currently unknown why some devices are impacted and others are not
This issue doesn’t seem to be related to charging cycles in general, but only on “impacted devices”, based on what The Verge said. The source also mentioned that it’s unknown why some devices are impacted and others are not.
In any case, if your device is impacted, Google is offering a free battery replacement. You can check here to see if your phone is eligible or not.
If all this sounds a bit familiar, well, the Pixel 4a is probably the reason why. Google was offering owners of the Pixel 4a a free battery replacement or a $100 credit towards a new phone. It is also worth noting that it’s currently offering an extended repair program for the Pixel 7a, as it has issues with battery swelling.
