Android 16 QPR2 Beta 2 Is Here: What's New for Pixel Phones?
by Jean Leon · Android HeadlinesGoogle has released the Android 16 QPR2 Beta 2 update for a wide range of eligible Pixel devices. This Quarterly Platform Release delivers more significant changes than standard monthly security patches and is now available for models from the Pixel 6 series all the way up to the new Pixel 10 lineup, as well as the Android Emulator.
To start, the beta has reached a Platform stability milestone. This means that the final app-facing behaviors are set for developers. However, Google notes that the Android system and its applications might still not work as expected, as the update is still in active development. The final public release of Android 16 QPR2 is expected to launch in December.

This beta includes several notable features. A new developer improves the app ecosystem by linking developers to their applications. This makes it more difficult for malicious apps to spread. Additionally, a new SMS OTP Protection feature helps prevent one-time password hijacking by delaying certain messages, enhancing user security.
The update also brings improvements to system performance. To do this, Google has developed the so-called Generational Concurrent Mark-Compact (CMC) Garbage Collector in the Android Runtime (ART). This is expected to lead to reduced CPU usage from garbage collection. The result will be a smoother user experience with less “jank” and improved battery efficiency.
There are also new features regarding user customization in the Android 16 QPR2 Beta 2 update. Users can now select from a list of custom app icon shapes and apply them system-wide. Other changes include new features in Health Connect, such as automatic step tracking and expanded exercise data.
Eligible Pixel devices
The update, with firmware version BP41.250822.010, includes the September 2025 security patch. It is available for devices like the Pixel 6, Pixel 7, Pixel Tablet, Pixel Fold, Pixel 8, Pixel 9, and Pixel 10 series. Users can install it by enrolling in the Android Beta Program or by flashing the system image.
