EU Offers Serbia Closer Ties After Student List Victory
· novinite.comThe European Union has offered to deepen cooperation with Serbia after the “Student List” won the parliamentary elections, pledging support for reforms to strengthen the rule of law, media freedom and democratic institutions and fight corruption, DPA reported.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa congratulated the “Student List” on its victory and expressed their readiness to help Serbia advance toward EU membership.
European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos pointed to historically high voter turnout in the elections, which followed almost two years of protests defending democracy, the rule of law and efforts to combat corruption.
Kos said the country could now enter a new phase and stressed that “the door to the EU is open.”
Serbia has been an EU candidate country since 2012, and accession negotiations began in 2014. However, progress has largely stalled because of policies pursued by the previous Serbian leadership, including concerns over compliance with democratic standards and the rule of law, as well as long-time Serbian leader Aleksandar Vučić’s close ties with Moscow, DPA reported.
