At least three Delhi Police personnel were injured after a group allegedly attacked them with bricks and sticks and threw chilli powder into their eyes while they were on patrolling duty in the Bhalswa Dairy area, police said on Sunday. The incident came to light after a video purportedly showing the assault went viral on social media.

The incident took place around 3.30 pm on Saturday in Janta Vihar, Mukundpur, when two cops from Bhalswa Dairy police station returned to the area after seizing a motorcycle allegedly being driven without valid documents.

According to police, Head Constables Dinesh and Rajesh were patrolling the area around 3 pm when they found the motorcycle without valid documents. Following procedure, they took the vehicle to the police station for deposition. When the two personnel returned around 3.30 pm, the motorcycle owner and some of his family members allegedly confronted them and questioned the police action.

The situation turned violent when the group allegedly threw chilli powder into the policemen’s eyes and attacked them with bricks and sticks. Head Constable Tinu, who reached the spot to assist his colleagues, was also attacked. All three police personnel sustained injuries, with Dinesh suffering a head injury. They were provided medical treatment and are currently stable, police said.

17-YEAR-OLD JUVENILE HELD

With the help of local residents, police detained a 17-year-old juvenile, classified as a juvenile in conflict with law, from the spot. The other alleged attackers fled following the assault. An FIR has been registered at Bhalswa Dairy police station under relevant sections of law, and efforts are underway to catch the remaining accused.

Joint Commissioner of Police, Northern Range, Vijay Singh said the case came to light after the video of the incident was circulated widely. “Police personnel had gone to locate a suspect linked to an incident involving a bike. While attempting to locate this young man, our police staff were unfortunately attacked,” Singh said.

MAIN ACCUSED HAS 5 PREVIOUS CASES

Police identified the main absconding accused as Sunil alias Pankaj, a declared bad character of the area. According to police, he has five previous criminal involvements, including two cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, as well as cases involving altercations and the Arms Act.

Singh said a rape case is also registered against the accused. The officer added that the accused has fled his home and a search is underway to apprehend him.
