Nancy Pelosi announces retirement

Nancy Pelosi announced her retirement from Congress today, saying she would not seek reelection in 2026. She is in her 20th term, having represented California's 11th congressional district in the House since 1987.

The video, titled "Thank you, San Franciso," was posted to Facebook and X.

"With a grateful heart, I look forward to my final year of service as your proud representative. As we go forward, my message to the city I love is this: San Francisco, know your power. We have made history. We have made progress. We have always led the way, and now we must continue to do so by remaining full participants in our Democracy and fighting for the American ideals we hold dear."

Pelosi, 85, led her party in the House of Representatives from 2003 to 2023, serving as House Speaker from 2007 to 2011 and then from 2019 to 2023. She is credited with pushing through President Barack Obama's healthcare legislation, President Joe Biden's infrastructure bill, and as a master of the legislative process. Moreover, she pushed for LGBTQ+ rights long before it was politically convenient to do so, and her first speech to Congress addressed the AIDS crisis. She and her husband also became vastly wealthy despite the job's modest paycheck; few are in any doubt as to how that happened.

Over to you, Chuck.
