At least 12 passengers were killed on Wednesday evening in a tragic train accident in North Maharashtra's Jalgaon after they were run over by another oncoming train on the adjacent tracks. These passengers had stepped down from their train after a rumour of fire spread, triggering panic amongst them.

Amid this, visuals from the spot have surfaced showing a crowd standing on the adjacent tracks. In the video shot by one of the passengers, a man can be heard warning people standing on the tracks to move away due to an oncoming train. However, none of them flinched and continued to stand there, worried due to the alleged fire in their train, which later turned out to be a rumour.

The accident took place between Maheji and Pardhade stations near Pachora. The Lucknow-Mumbai Pushpak Express had halted after someone pulled the chain due to a rumour of fire at around 5:00 PM.

As the train stopped, some of the passengers of the Pushpak Express got down. They were standing on the tracks when they were hit by the oncoming Karnataka Express, which was headed to Delhi from Bengaluru.

Harrowing videos and images also showed bodies of the victims lying on the tracks as other passengers roamed around.

The spot where the accident took place is over 400 km away from Mumbai.

A senior railway official told news agency PTI: "Our preliminary information is that there were sparks inside one of the coaches of Pushpak Express due to either `hot axle' or `brake-binding' (jamming), and some passengers panicked. They pulled the chain, and some of them jumped down. At the same time, Karnataka Express was passing."

Maharashtra minister Gulabrao Patil, who is also the guardian minister of Jalgaon,  said that senior officials are reaching the spot, after which more information will be available.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has expressed condolences over the tragic accident and assured that the district administration is working in coordination with the railway administration to make immediate arrangements for the injured people's treatment.
