Jana Nayagan box office Day 5: Vijay film sees 68% drop after Rs 200-crore run

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay's Jana Nayagan earned Rs 10.15 crore nett in India on its first Monday. The fall from Sunday still pushed Vijay's final film past Rs 230 crore worldwide in five days.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay's recently released Jana Nayagan saw its first weekday slowdown on Monday after an exceptional opening weekend driven by Vijay's farewell buzz. The political action drama earned an estimated Rs 10.15 crore nett (gross minus taxes) in India on Day 5 across all languages, registering a 68 per cent drop from Sunday, but still took its worldwide gross past Rs 230 crore within five days of release.

According to trade tracker Sacnilk, the film's total India nett collection now stands at Rs 134.90 crore, while its India gross has reached Rs 157.74 crore. Overseas, it added Rs 4 crore on Monday, taking its international gross to Rs 75.50 crore and its worldwide gross to Rs 233.24 crore.

The Day 5 India nett total of Rs 10.15 crore was led by the Tamil version, which contributed Rs 8.40 crore. The Hindi version added Rs 1.20 crore, while the Telugu version brought in Rs 55 lakh. With its cumulative India nett at around Rs 134 crore, the film is now on course to cross the Rs 150-crore mark soon.

Released on July 23 after a seven-month delay, Jana Nayagan opened strongly on the back of Vijay's large fan following and the emotional pull of being billed as his swansong as he shifts his focus to full-time politics. Despite mixed reviews and controversy over a pre-release HD leak, the film continued to perform strongly overseas and crossed the Rs 200-crore mark worldwide during its opening weekend.

The film's theatrical run is now being watched closely through the weekdays, with Monday collections often seen as a key indicator of long-term performance. Even with the expected fall from its weekend numbers, Jana Nayagan managed to post a double-digit India nett on its first Monday.

Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan stars Vijay, Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Priyamani and Narain. The film, which received an A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), is Vijay's 69th and final film and has maintained a strong box-office run despite the weekday dip.
