JNI condemns Kebbi schoolgirls abduction, calls for urgent government action

The Jama’atu Nasril Islam, led by the Sultan of Sokoto, has condemned the recent abduction of schoolgirls from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State, describing the attack as a “heartless and avoidable tragedy.”

In a statement on Wednesday, the Islamic organisation expressed concern over the recurring pattern of mass abductions in northern Nigeria, noting that the incident occurred just days after a Security Summit in Birnin-Kebbi on November 10.

JNI Secretary-General, Prof. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, highlighted what the organisation described as “gaps in security coordination” within Kebbi State. The statement referenced the recent kidnapping and release of the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, warning that such incidents indicate an escalation in criminal activity.

The body drew comparisons between the Maga school abduction and previous attacks in Chibok, Dapchi, Kankara, and Kagara, questioning how the perpetrators were able to infiltrate the school. JNI criticised what it termed the “reactive posture” of security agencies and noted the impact on parents’ willingness to send their children, especially girls, to school.

Condoling with the families of the slain Vice-Principal and the parents of the abducted girls, JNI called for intensified prayers and urged governments at all levels to implement coordinated measures to ensure the safe release of the victims.

The organisation also urged northern governors to prioritise school security, particularly in forested areas, emphasising that preventive measures must now guide security strategy.

“The government must rise against the tide of insecurity in whatever form before it escalates further,” the statement concluded.
