India Reaffirms Support for Myanmar’s Sovereignty During President Min Aung Hlaing Visit
· Eleven Media Group Co., LtdIndian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reaffirmed India’s support for Myanmar’s sovereignty and territorial integrity during talks with Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing in New Delhi.
According to a joint statement released during U Min Aung Hlaing’s official visit to India, the two leaders discussed regional and global issues, bilateral relations, security cooperation, trade, infrastructure and connectivity projects during their June 1 meeting.
Modi said Myanmar remains important to India’s “Neighbourhood First” and “Act East” policies and stressed the importance of preventing either country’s territory from being used to threaten the other’s security. U Min Aung Hlaing also pledged that Myanmar territory would not be allowed to harm India’s security interests.
India further expressed support for Myanmar-led efforts toward peace, stability, national reconciliation and socio-economic development, while both sides agreed to deepen cooperation in defense, border management, trade and investment.
The two countries also emphasized the need to complete key regional connectivity projects, including the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project and the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway.
India announced it would increase Mekong-Ganga ICCR scholarships for Myanmar students from 36 to 100 starting in 2026. Both countries also agreed to expand trade and investment cooperation, including the continued use of the Rupee-Kyat payment system introduced in 2024.
U Min Aung Hlaing is on his first official visit to India from May 30 to June 3 at the invitation of Modi. During the trip, he attended the Myanmar-India Business Forum in New Delhi and held meetings with Indian leaders, business representatives and officials.
