SEOUL, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- South Korea's opposition parties submitted an impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk Yeol on Wednesday afternoon, just hours after his short-lived attempt at imposing martial law was overturned by lawmakers.

VANCOUVER - Global Affairs Canada is warning Canadians in South Korea to avoid demonstrations and exercise caution after the country's president imposed an hours-long period of martial law.

South Korea President Yoon made the announcement during a televised briefing, vowing to “eradicate pro-North Korean forces and protect the constitutional democratic order.” However, it wasn't immediately clear how the steps would affect the country's governance and democracy.

The south Korean President announced martial law late Tuesday night, after which the military proclaimed that parliament and other political gatherings that could cause “social confusion” would be suspended. In all, the martial law was in effect for about six hours.
